"You can call it destiny, divine intervention, but we took this championship. We did what we needed to do and we took this championship on the field."
In January 1999, Coach Phillip Fulmer and the 1998 Vols football team made history; the team won the national championship, the first for the Vols since 1951, and completed the school's first-ever 13-0 season. The 23-16 win over the Florida State Seminoles went down in Tempe, Arizona at the Fiesta Bowl.
A Fiesta Bowl record crowd of 84,470 saw the game, only the second meeting between the two schools, the first coming in 1958.
The 1998 Vols are often remembered as the "team of destiny." The team earned the nickname after winning games in at times extreme circumstances. Among those? The Arkansas game with Razorback QB Clint Stoerner's still infamous fumble.
More than three dozen members of the Vols' 1998 team went on to the NFL.
More than 15 years after that history making win and season, the Vols' national championship remains one of your "Straight from the Heart" Moments.
