Several Vols, local players selected in MLB Draft

Several players with local ties have been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.

Bearden outfielder Lane Thomas was picked in the 5th round (144th) by the Toronto Blue Jays. Thomas told WBIR that he will sign, which means he cannot play at Tennessee. The allotted slot value for that pick according to Baseball America is $343,000.

Former Morristown East and Walters State pitcher Brett Martin was the first local player to be selected. The right-hander was picked in the fourth round, 126th overall, by the Texas Rangers. Slot value for that pick is $408,000.

Another Tennessee commit, Oak Ridge pitcher Kevin Steen, was taken in the 9th round, 284th overall by the Boston Red Sox. Slot value for that selection is $142,600. Steen says he will wait until the July 18 deadline to make his decision.

Former Halls and Memphis RHP Bryce Beeler was picked by the New York Mets in the 19th round (565th overall).

Seymour and LMU pitcher Logan Sawyer was selected in the 29th round (863 overall) by the Colorado Rockies.

Anderson County RHP Hunter Tackett was the 1056 overall pick in the 35th round by the Milwaukee Brewers.

A handful of current members of the Vol baseball team were also drafted.

Third baseman Will Maddox was selected in the 18th round (550th overall pick) by the Detroit Tigers.

RHP Nick Williams was taken in the 26th round (767th overall pick) by the Miami Marlins.

Also in the 26th round, SS Taylor Smart was drafted by the Seattle Mariners (771st overall pick).
