Paradise Island, Bahamas (Sports Network) - Andre Hollins knocked down three
free throws with less than a second remaining to propel the Minnesota Golden
Gophers to a win over the Stanford Cardinal, 66-63, to secure fifth-place in
the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament.
Hollins, who was coming off a career-night where he went for 41 points in a
win over Memphis, scored just eight points but was fouled by Chasson Randle
with less than a second remaining on a half-court shot attempt. Trevor Mbakwe
led the way for Minnesota (6-1) with 19 points and 12 boards in 24 minutes off
the bench. Rodney Williams scored 12 points and Joe Coleman added 11. No one
on the Gophers had more than two assists.
Dwight Powell was the lone bright spot for the Cardinal (4-3). He dropped 22
points on 7-of-11 from the field and a perfect 7-of-7 from the free throw
line. Randle added 13 but shot hit just 2-of-9 shots. Josh Huestis
missed on all seven of his field goal attempts before fouling out.
Stanford led for most of the first half but an Mbakwe layup with 49 seconds
remaining before halftime tied the score at 32-32. Both teams shot under 40
percent from the field in the opening half.
The Gophers took an early second half lead and went up by eight at the
12:53 minute mark. Powell then took over for Stanford, which regained the
lead and held a slim advantage for the next couple of minutes. Down two with
14 seconds left, Powell drew a foul on Mbakwe and made both free throws, tying
the score to set up Hollins' last second heroics.
Stanford is now on a three-game losing streak after opening the season with
four consecutive wins.
