Hattiesburg, MS (Sports Network) - Jerrold Brooks scored a game-high 16 points
as the Southern Miss Golden Eagles defeated the Houston Cougars, 73-54, in
Conference USA play at Reed Green Coliseum.
Brooks was 7-of-12 from the floor, including two 3-pointers in the Southern
Miss (13-4, 2-0 C-USA) victory. Daveon Boardingham recorded 12 points and five
boards. Norville Carey scored 11 points off the bench as the Golden Eagles won
their fifth straight.
For the Cougars (12-3, 1-1), Joseph Young scored a team-high 14 points to go
along with five rebounds. TaShawn Thomas recorded 10 points, five boards and
five assists but was the only other play in double figures as the Cougars had
a seven-game win streak snapped.
Thanks to a 19-0 run towards the end of the first half, Southern Miss claimed
a 36-15 advantage at the break. The hosts shot an impressive 51.7 percent from
the floor in the frame and held Houston to just 6-of-22 shooting.
Houston was 13-of-35 from the floor and 3-of-15 from long range, while
Southern Miss was 16-of-36 from the field in the second half as it cruised to
the victory.
Southern Miss controlled the boards, 45-36, and points in the paint, 44-26.
