Boston, MA (Sports Network) - Quincy Ford and Joel Smith scored 15 points each
to propel the Northeastern Huskies to a 71-51 rout of the George Mason
Patriots in a battle atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings at
Matthews Arena.
Ford also grabbed seven rebounds for the Huskies (13-7, 8-0 CAA) as they
extended their winning streak to eight games and kept their perfect league
record intact. Reggie Spencer got into the mix with 14 points and six boards,
Dinko Marshavelski tallied 11 points off the bench, and Smith dealt out six
assists.
For George Mason (12-8, 5-3), Ventrail Vaughns tied a season-high in the
setback with 13 points. Sherrod Wright scored 12 points but committed six
turnovers as the Patriots saw their three-game winning streak come to an end.
Northeastern shot an even 50 percent from the floor in the opening half which
helped it take a 29-21 lead into the intermission. The Patriots were only able
to connect on 25.8 percent of their field goal attempts before the break.
Although George Mason improved to 42.9 percent shooting after halftime, The
Huskies pulled away by hitting 56.5 percent of their field goal attempts,
including 5-of-8 from 3-point range, while also adding 11 free throws in the
second half. The Patriots went on a 15-4 run to make cut the deficit to just
four points at 49-45 with 6:34 left in regulation, but Northeastern outscored
the visitors, 22-6, the rest of the way to arrive at the 20-point decision.
Northeastern outscored George Mason, 21-12, from beyond the arc and also,
14-7, at the charity stripe in the contest.
