Dayton, OH (Sports Network) - Khalif Wyatt led all scorers with 20 points, as
the Temple Owls rallied for a 72-71 win over the Dayton Flyers in an Atlantic
10 Conference nail-biter at UD Arena.
Trailing by two with seven seconds to play in regulation, Wyatt put the Owls
(16-7, 5-4 A-10) on top with a clutch 3-pointer. Anthony Lee contributed 13
points and nine rebounds in the victory, while Will Cummings and Jake O'Brien
scored 11 apiece.
Kevin Dillard paced the Flyers (13-10, 3-6) with 16 points and five assists.
Vee Sanford added 14 points, and Devin Oliver recorded a double-double with 12
points and 12 rebounds. Josh Benson also scored 12 for the hosts, while
Dyshawn Pierre finished with nine points and 11 boards.
Temple raced out to an early 9-2 lead, its largest of the game. However, UD
battled right back to go ahead, 13-11, on a layup by Benson. The teams
continued to trade jabs throughout the first half as Temple took a 36-33
advantage into the break.
The Flyers had the hot hand in the second half, and they led by as many as 10
with 5:09 remaining in regulation. But from that point, the Owls closed out
the contest with a pivotal 16-5 run, capped by Wyatt's go-ahead three in the
final seconds. Still, UD had a chance to tie or take the lead when Benson was
sent to the free-throw line with one second on the clock, but he missed both
attempts and O'Brien secured the rebound for Temple.
Free throws were an issue for both teams throughout the game, as Temple shot
just 10-of-22 (.455) at the charity stripe, while the Flyers were 19-of-33
(.576). The Owls committed only eight turnovers for the contest, compared to
14 for UD.
