Stanford, CA (Sports Network) - Jio Fontan tallied 15 points and five assists
as the USC Trojans held off a second-half surge by the Stanford Cardinal to
make claim to a 65-64 Pac-12 Conference win at Maples Pavilion.
Dewayne Dedmon added 13 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks for USC (12-13,
7-5 Pac-12), which extended its season-long winning streak to four games. J.T.
Terrell chipped in 12 points for the visitors.
For Stanford (15-10, 6-6), Josh Huestis scored 22 points on 10-of-13 from the
field, while Dwight Powell had 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds.
Chasson Randle netted 16 points for the Cardinal, who have lost two of three.
USC shot 42.4 percent from the field in the first half, while holding the
Cardinal to just 35.5 percent shooting, as it took a comfortable 35-23
advantage into intermission.
The Trojans led throughout the second half, but Stanford made a late push.
Down six with 30 seconds to play, the Cardinal scored five points in less than
five seconds to get within one, 65-64. Eric Wise stepped to the foul line for
USC with 18 seconds left and missed both attempts, giving Stanford one last
shot to win the game, but Randle's 3-pointer in the waning seconds did not
fall.
The difference was made at the foul line, where USC shot 18-of-23. Stanford
was only 4-of-12 from the stripe.
