Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) - Led by a game-high 19 points from
Cleanthony Early, the Wichita State Shockers felled the Indiana State
Sycamores, 66-62, in a Missouri Valley Conference bout at the Hulman Center.
For the Shockers (23-5, 12-4 MVC), Malcolm Armstead added 18 points, Demetric
Williams finished with 12 and seven rebounds, followed by Carl Hall who scored
10 points.
Manny Arop led three Sycamores (16-11, 9-7) in double figures with 17 and nine
rebounds, while Jake Odum recorded 15 points, six rebounds and five assists
and R.J. Mahurin finished with 13 points.
Both teams struggled from the field to start the game. ISU made just 37.5
percent of their field goal tries and WSU made just 32 percent, as the score
was all knotted up at 25-25 at the half.
The Shockers shot 44.4 percent (12-of-27) from the field while the Sycamores
shot 44 percent (11-of-25) in the second half. Both squads hit on 4-of-9 from
3-point range in the half. Despite the similar stats the Shockers led by
seven, 62-55, with just 41 seconds to play. A 7-2 run by the Sycamores in just
16 seconds cut their deficit to only two but they could get no closer, as the
Shockers handed them their first loss at home in conference play this season.
Indiana State had a 37-31 edge in rebounding. The Shockers' bench outscored
their counterparts by a 26-2 margin.
