Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - A 3-pointer by Rob Lewis in the waning moments
of the second overtime gave the Houston Baptist Huskies a thrilling 76-74 win
over the Utah Valley University Wolverines in the quarterfinals of the Great
West Tournament at the Jones Convocation Center.
Lewis finished with a game-high 24 points off the bench for the fourth-seeded
Huskies (13-16) who now move on to the semifinals on Friday evening where they
will face top-seeded NJIT. Marcel Smith accounted for 18 points and Art
Bernardi a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds in the triumph.
The fifth-seeded Wolverines (14-18) were paced by Nick Thompson who recorded a
double-double of his own with 22 points and 13 boards, but he was also guilty
of seven turnovers. Jason Johnson responded with 20 points, Ben Aird 19 and
Holton Hunsaker 10 points in the losing cause.
A close game throughout, the teams were knotted at the half, 27-27, even as
Houston Baptist shot just 35.5 percent from the floor through the first 20
minutes of action.
Eventually the Huskies connected on 43.9 percent of their field goal attempts
overall, but an even better 45.5 percent (10-of-22) beyond the arc in order to
pull out the win.
UVU shot just 4-of-13 on the perimeter and turned the ball over 18 times.
