MOSCOW (School release)-- The first day of the 2014 FIBA 3x3 World Championship, which runs through Sunday, is in the books, and the USA Women's 3x3 World Championship Team won both of its games on Thursday.
Tennessee's Cierra Burdick (Charlotte, N.C.) and teammates Sara Hammond (Louisville/Mt. Vernon, Ky.), Jewell Loyd (Notre Dame/Lincolnwood, Ill.) and Tiffany Mitchell (South Carolina/Charlotte, N.C.) opened play with a 21-5 victory over Hungary (0-2) and then took care of Brazil, 21-8.
Pool D play continues on Friday, as the Americans face Ukraine at 4:20 p.m. (8:20 a.m. ET), Spain at 6:20 p.m. (10:20 a.m. ET) and Argentina at 8:40 p.m. (12:40 p.m. ET). Round of 16 and quarterfinal contests will be played on Saturday, followed by semifinals and finals on Sunday.
Burdick is seeking her fourth international gold medal with USA Basketball. She previously played for the 2011 U19 World Championship, the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship and the 2009 FIBA Americas U16 Championship.
In addition to the women's 3x3 tournament, included in the 2014 3x3 World Championship program will be a skills contest, shoot-out contest and free throw pursuits. Burdick is entered in the shoot-out competition. The qualification process will take place on Saturday, while the medal finals will be held on Sunday afternoon.
