Derek Barnett named SEC defensive lineman of the week

Tennessee Volunteers junior defensive lineman Derek Barnett won SEC defensive lineman of the week despite the Vols’ 49-10 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Barnett finished Saturday’s game with three tackles, two tackles for a loss, one sack, one forced fumble and one interception.

Barnett is tied for second in the SEC with six sacks this season. He also has 11.5 TFLs, which is also second in the conference.

With 26 career sacks, Barnett ranks second among active FBS players. He is six sacks away from tying Reggie White (32) for the UT all-time record.

Tennessee dropped from No. 9 to No. 18 in the AP Top 25 Poll on Sunday.

Saturday's loss to No. 1 Alabama marked Tennessee's 13th consecutive loss against an SEC West opponent.

Tennessee's (5-2, 2-2 SEC) next chance to beat an SEC West team in the regular season comes Oct. 21, 2017, against Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
