COLUMBIA, S.C. - Tennessee (5-2, 2-2 SEC) is coming off of its bye week hoping to snap a two-game losing streak in a Saturday night road game against South Carolina.

Here’s what you need to know about the Gamecocks.

Overview: South Carolina snapped its three-game losing streak in a 34-28 home win against Massachusetts on Saturday.

The Gamecocks are led by first-year head coach Will Muschamp, who was the head coach at Florida from 2011-2014.

Series against UT: Tennessee has a 25-7-2 record against South Carolina. The series dates back to 1903.

Last season, the Vols beat the Gamecocks 27-24.

South Carolina last beat Tennessee in a 38-35 contest on Oct. 27, 2012.

 

Things to know about the South Carolina Gamecocks

1. The Gamecocks start a true freshman at quarterback: Freshman quarterback Jake Bentley threw for two touchdowns and 201 yards in Saturday’s win against Massachusetts. It marked Bentley’s first collegiate game.

Muschamp expected to redshirt Bentley this season, but South Carolina entered Saturday’s game last in points per game in the Football Bowl Subdivision.

The victory tied the Gamecocks’ win total from the 2015 season.

The Gamecocks have won only two SEC games the past two seasons.

2. South Carolina struggles to score: The 34 points scored against Massachusetts marked South Carolina’s largest scoring total for the season.

The Gamecocks rank second to last in the FBS with an average of 16.9 points per game.

 

3. South Carolina ranks 28th in the country in points allowed: The Gamecocks allow an average of 21.3 points per game, which ranks sixth in the SEC.

South Carolina and LSU are the only two SEC teams that haven't given up more than 28 points in a game this season.

4. About two-thirds of South Carolina’s roster are underclassmen: Seventy-eight of the Gamecocks' 115-man roster (67.8 percent) are either freshmen or sophomores.

Twelve true freshmen have seen game action this season.

South Carolina has had 18 new starters, including six true freshman, through seven games this season.

5. Butch Jones is 3-0 against South Carolina: All three wins have been decided by three points or less.
