We live in a world full of hot takes. Things supposedly have to be right or wrong, or black or white, or great or terrible.

Those whose thoughts live only on the extreme ends, won’t like hearing this, but here goes: Tennessee’s 2016 football season has been a disappointment, but it also has been a step in the right direction.

Vols coach Butch Jones loves him some sunshine-pumping, but this season hasn’t been the resounding success he so badly wants everyone to believe.

At least a solid-sized chunk of Tennessee’s fan base loves being critical, but this season hasn’t been the unmitigated disaster so many of them so badly want everyone to believe.
