Meet the new Vols basketball staff

Donnie Tyndall has filled his coaching staff with the exception of one position- Director of Player Development. Each staff member with the exception of Al Pinkins worked with Tyndall at Southern Miss. Learn more about each assistant below.

Al Pinkins, Assistant Coach/Recruiting Coordinator

  • MTSU, Assistant Coach, 2003-2011
  • Ole Miss, Assistant/Recruiting Coordinator, 2011-2014
  • averaged 9.5 points and 7 rebounds as player at NC State
  • played professional in Spain, Qatar and China against Yao Ming
  • worked with Tyndall when both were assistants at MTSU under Kermit Davis
  • will work with post players but recruiting will be biggest thing he brings to the table

Adam Howard, Assistant Coach

  • Morehead State, Graduate Assistant, 2009
  • Morehead State, Assistant Coach, 2010-2012
  • Southern Miss, Assistant Coach, 2012-2014
  • Player at Western Kentucky, 2004-2008
  • drove Tyndall to his interview with Tennessee
  • will work with guards
  • entirety of Howard's college coaching career has been on Tyndall's staff
  • as a kid played basketball with former Lady Vol Alexis Hornbuckle
  • played at Thompson-Boling with Western Kentucky against Tennessee; played the role of Chris Lofton on scout team

Chris Shumate, Assistant Coach

  • Cincinnati, Director of Operations, 2007-2009
  • Cincinnati, Director of Student-Athlete Development, 2009-2013
  • Southern Miss, Assistant Coach, 2013-2014
  • played for Mick Cronin at Murray State and served on Cronin's staff at Cincinnati for six seasons
  • will work with post players
