Tennessee plays No. 9 Wisconsin to open Maui Invitational

LAHAINA, Hawaii – The Tennessee men’s basketball team plays No. 9 Wisconsin on Monday in the opening game of the Maui Invitational.

Vols head coach Rick Barnes will make history as the first coach to take three different programs to the tournament. Barnes took Providence to Hawaii in 1991, and he took Texas on three different occasions.

Chattanooga beat Tennessee (1-1) in the season-opening game, but the Vols defeated Appalachian State 103-94 to start Barnes’ second season at the school. The win helped Tennessee avoid its first 0-2 start since 1965-1966.

Wisconsin (2-1) bounced back with a 69-51 win over Chicago State after falling to Creighton last week.

Badgers head coach Greg Gard was named interim head coach last December when Bo Ryan retired in the middle of the season. Gard led Wisconsin to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament to earn the full-time job.

Wisconsin is one of three ranked teams in the eight-team tournament along with fourth-ranked Oregon and No. 5 North Carolina.

Tipoff between the Vols and Badgers is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET Monday. The game airs on ESPN2.
