Vol hoops to host Kansas State in SEC/Big 12 Challenge

(School release)-- The Southeastern Conference and ESPN announced the dates and matchups for the 2014 SEC/Big 12 Challenge Wednesday. Tennessee hosts Kansas State at Thompson-Boling Arena on Saturday, Dec. 6.

Tip times and specific TV network designations for all SEC/Big 12 Challenge games will be announced at a later date. However, all games will be televised on an ESPN platform.

Tennessee's matchup with Kansas State adds to an already ambitious non-conference schedule for the upcoming season that includes games against Butler and NC State as well as a Thanksgiving weekend trip to the eight-team Old Spice Classic near Orlando, Fla.

The Volunteers have never previously faced Kansas State on the hardwood. Tennessee's all-time record against current members of the Big 12 stands at 10-15.

K-State posted a 20-13 (8-8 Big 12) record last season and earned its fifth straight NCAA Tournament berth. Veteran head coach Bruce Weber just completed his second year leading the Wildcats.

Kansas State director of athletics John Currie has occupied that position since May 2009. Prior to that, he worked more than 10 years in the Tennessee athletic department, rising to the title of executive associate AD (overseeing external operations, as well as the men's basketball program). Currie received his master's degree in Sports Management from UT in 2003.

Since the Big 12 has only 10 teams, the four SEC teams not participating in this year's challenge are Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi State and Texas A&M.
