Vols baseball, softball off to a strong start

After a tough football season and inconsistencies from the basketball team, Vol fans see a bright spot on the diamond.

The University of Tennessee baseball team is undefeated and the women's softball team only has one loss so far this season.

Vols Baseball Head Coach Dave Serrano said the fan base "has been starving for success for many years."

The team is 11-0 heading into Wednesday night's game against La Salle University. Thursday night, the Vols beat La Salle 14-0.

"I'm so proud that they are having the success that they are having. We have a lot of work to do. But what we've accomplished so far is very gratifying," Serrano said.

The team hasn't made it to the post season in many years. Coach Serrano said this may be the team to take them there.

Fans have taken notice of their success. He said their enthusiasm makes a difference in players' morale.

"It's a huge thing that our fans are supporting us. They've supported us since I've come back. We're finally giving them the product they deserve," he said.

Jeff Elliot, a season ticket holder for about than 20 years, said he is more excited about this team than he has been in years.

"The team is playing so well. It's encouraging to see everything pointed in the right direction," Elliot said.

The Lady Vols softball team is ranked number 2 in the country. The team's home-opener is Wednesday with a doubleheader against Wright State. The team has a 15-1 record going into those games.

"I like where we are. I think the preseason has taught us what you expect it to but there's still a lot of room to grow," said Lady Vols co-head coach, Karen Weekly.
