Sophomore Tennessee safety Micah Abernathy was named SEC defensive player of the week on Monday.
Abernathy recorded three solo tackles and recovered three fumbles on Saturday against Virginia Tech at the Battle at Bristol.
"Coming into this season as a starter, I just wanted to do my best and help my teammates out," Abernathy said at a press conference on Monday, "and I believe I have done that so far. It's an honor and a privilege and I feel blessed. I am looking forward to playing this week against Ohio and I am thankful for this but I am looking forward to this game."
The three fumbles recovered in one game was a Tennessee football record. Abernathy's fumble recoveries led to 14 points for the Vols. He now leads the country in fumbles recovered this season, with three. Saturday against Virginia Tech was Abernathy's second career start with Tennessee.
