A look back at the 1st Battle at Bristol

Fans who attended the professional football game remember how hard it was to see the field.

BRISTOL - We're just days away from the much-anticipated Battle at Bristol, but while it will be played before the largest college football crowd of all time, it won't actually be the first football game played at the race track.

In 1961, an NFL exhibition game matched the Washington Redskins against the Philadelphia Eagles at Bristol Motor Speedway.

A fan that attended the game has fond memories of being there with his father, but remembered one disadvantage to the field.

"It was pretty tough to see, like looking across two lanes of the track then three or four lanes of pit row then across the infield. It was pretty tough," said Chris Thomas.

Fans attending the September 10 game between Tennessee and Virginia Tech will have one advantage they didn't have 55 years ago--- the Colossus. The giant screen is suspended over the field and will help those attending the game keep up with the action.

There will be at least one more football game at BMS. On September 17, the ETSU Buccaneers will play against Western Carolina.
