Former Vol helps Titans defeat San Diego Chargers 20-17

(THE TENNESSEAN) The long losing streak to the Chargers is over.

Quarterback Jake Locker connected with rookie wide receiver Justin Hunter for a 34-yard touchdown with 15 seconds left to give Tennessee a 20-17 win over San Diego.

The Titans got the ball at their own 6-yard line with 2:05 left and had no timeouts. Locker then led a 94-yard drive on 10 plays in 1:50.

The win snapped a nine-game losing streak to the Chargers that dated back to 1992. The Titans improved to 2-1.

Locker finished 23 of 37 for 299 yards and two touchdowns, including one rushing.

The Chargers jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a 7-yard pass from Philip Rivers to tight end Antonio Gates, but the Titans made it 7-3 early in the second on Rob Bironas' 20-yard field goal.

Punter Brett Kern mishandled a snap, which gave San Diego the ball deep in Tennessee territory, but the Chargers managed only a field goal. The Titans then tied it 10-10 on Locker's seven-yard touchdown run.

Titans safety Bernard Pollard blocked a field goal attempt by the Chargers on the final play of the first half to keep the game tied.

It was a sloppy first half for the Titans, who committed 10 penalties for 110 yards in the first 30 minutes.

After a missed field goal by Bironas, the Chargers drove to reclaim the lead. A one-yard touchdown run by Ronnie Brown made it 17-10 with 2:42 left in the third quarter.

The Titans drove inside San Diego's 20 midway through the fourth quarter, but had to settle for a 37-yard field goal to make it 17-13 with 6:07 remaining.
