The Coalfield Yellow Jackets are heading into their seventh season under head coach Keith Henry. Coalfield lost five players to season-ending injuries last year, but they're ready for another playoff run. Despite the loss, Coalfield made it to the Class 1A semifinals where they fell to South Pittsburg, 43-22.
The Yellow Jackets are working on beefing up both lines and Tennessee commit Zach Stewart is helping with that.
Meanwhile, district foe Oneida is looking for a quarterback. The Indians finished 9-3 in 2013 and lost to Grace Christian in the second round of the Class 2A. Oneida lost QB Cole West to graduation and head coach Tony Lambert's son Jacob is competing for the job.
"Its pushed us to work harder and compete against each other with a friendly competition," said Jacob Lambert. "Me and the other quarterbacks, we're real close friends. We hang out and we just want to have a friendly competition and win the battle the way we should."
Coalfield opens the season with Copper Basin on August 22.
Oneida hosts Rockwood to kickoff the season on August 22.
