KNOXVILLE - The reigning Class 4A state champion Knoxville Catholic Fighting Irish visited Fulton High School, and dealt the Falcons a 69-42 loss.
Catholic opened the game with 21 unanswered points to a crowd that featured Vols football coach Butch Jones and defensive back Todd Kelly Jr. Catholic didn't take many shots to Amari Rodgers because of matchups, but found solid production out of senior running back Jeffery Wood and wide receiver Chase Kuerschen.
Irish senior quarterback Chase Cunningham threw for 354 yards and two touchdowns before the half, at which point Catholic led 42-12. He would finish the game with 500 yards and five touchdowns. The Irish posted 745 yards total.
"He's an outstanding quarterback," Irish coach Steve Matthews said of his quarterback. "We have a great group of receivers. We protected really well tonight. That's always an issue with these guys. With just all the pressure they bring. Really stood in the pocket well and keeps getting better and better."
DJ Mitchell made a one-handed leaping catch for an interception shortly before the first half concluded.
Fulton fell to 2-3 on the season, while Catholic boasts a 4-1 record.
