Boston, MA (Sports Network) - The Boston Red Sox have signed outfielder Jonny
Gomes to a two-year contract.
Financial terms were not disclosed, but the Boston Globe had previously
reported the deal to be worth $10 million.
Gomes helped Oakland to an AL West title last season, batting .262 in 99 games
with 18 homers and 47 runs batted in. He had a career-high .377 on-base
percentage, including a .404 mark after the All-Star break, and led the majors
with a .480 batting average with two outs and runners in scoring position.
The 32-year-old native of California is familiar with the AL East, having
played for Tampa Bay from 2003-08. He has also spent time with Cincinnati
(2009-11) and Washington (2011) in a 10-year big league career.
Gomes is a career .244 hitter with 136 homers and 411 RBI in 880 games.
