If you were wondering who was kicking field goals for Tennessee this past Saturday, you weren't alone.
Devin Mathis was a former walk-on. He left the football team after last season. He said he wanted to be a normal college student and be able to take naps at 2:30 in the afternoon.
Last winter semester, Mathis studied abroad in Mexico. When he got back to Knoxville, Mathis decided not to rejoin the football team. However, after a couple weeks into the season and with the urging of his roommates, Jonathan Crompton and Wes Brown, Mathis decided to return to the team.
He'd only been practicing for about two weeks, and at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, Lane Kiffin told Mathis he would be the starter against Vanderbilt.
Mathis is not listed on this week's depth chart, but he is still practicing.
Mathis only kicked one year in high school and said his longest field goal is from 48 yards. He says he feels comfortable from that range now.
