The Titans' last draft pick to sign his contract got a big Tennessee welcome at training camp Saturday afternoon. They wrapped up his first practice by making him sprint while his teammates watching. Coach Jeff Fisher ordered the Titans to the goal line, then had Michael Griffin start running. Out to the 5 and back, then to the 10 and back, then to the 15 until he worked his way all the way out to the 40 and finished. The 19th pick overall out of Texas agreed to his five-year contract late Friday afternoon. He was not able to begin practice until the afternoon because he was waiting for the NFL to approve the language in his deal. Coach Jeff Fisher said Griffin looked good even with the running that's become tradition for any holdouts.
The Titans are mixing and matching players to bolster a secondary that won't have suspended cornerback Adam "Pacman" Jones for at least 10 games.
Griffin worked cornerback this afternoon, but no one knows how long the top draft pick will stay at that position. The Titans have 10 cornerbacks and seven safeties in camp. Only the strong safety Chris Hope, who was a free agent signee last year, is guaranteed his starting spot. The competition is open at free safety where Lamont Thompson started last year.
Fisher said some spots might sort out in a couple days but others may not be decided until the September 9 opener in Jacksonville.
With only three quarterbacks in training camp, the Titans are being careful not let anyone overdo it. Offensive coordinator Norm Chow says they are watching how many balls Vince Young throws each day. And nobody is out throwing balls before or after practice. Young iced down his shoulder at the end of the morning practice Saturday and took part in the afternoon practice. He says he doesn't need to sit back because he's trying to show his teammates he's making good progress.
