Week 10 of the high school football season is in the books and only one week remains until playoff action begins. Here are the highlights from Week 10.
Morristown West (6-2) clinched the Region 1-5A title for the first time since 2006 after defeating Sevier County 41-20 in our PrepXtra Game of the Week. The win ended the Trojans' 34-year losing streak to the Smoky Bears (3-6). Morristown West running back Daymion Blevins finished with 311 yards on the ground along with 61 receiving yards.
Oak Ridge (7-2) traveled to Webb (7-1) for a non-regional matchup. Both teams only had one loss, and it showed in a back and forth game. Webb scored first with a touchdown pass from Hunter Green to Jahill Jefferson, but the lead would not last. Oak Ridge would score 14 unanswered points, with Kyndall Clark blocking a punt and Tee Higgins with an 80-yard pick six. The Spartans would bounce back, though. Hunter Green tossed his second touchdown of the night, this time to running back Elijah Howard. With just under a minute left in the 4th quarter, the game was tied at 21. Webb kicker Andrew Favaro nailed the game-winning field goal to give the Spartans a 24-21 win. This was coach David Meske's 250th career win in over three decades of coaching at Webb.
Fulton (6-3) blazed by West (4-5) after a 44-3 win Friday night. The Falcons took a 6-3 lead after senior running back Chaton Mobley powered his way into the end zone for a score. The point after attempt failed. DaShaun McKinney hauled in a 14-yard pass from Xavier Malone to build a 12-3 lead. Malone finished 15-24 for 282 yards and three touchdowns. Fulton will find out whether it is a No. 2 or No. 3 seed in the Region 2-4A standings after it plays Central October 28.
Gibbs (6-3) scored a touchdown on its first four possessions en route to a 40-26 win over Carter (2-7). Three of those touchdowns came on the ground from Noel Leyva, Dalton Rodgers and H.T. Fortner. Fortner added a 67-yard passing touchdown to Tanner Rhodes. The Eagles already clinched the Region 2-5A title. They play West next Friday.
Greenback (9-0) secured the No. 1 seed in the Region 2-1A playoffs after taking down region foe Harriman, 41-6. Greenback's Kayne Roberts put his team up 14-0 after taking the pitch and zooming past the Harriman defense for a 66-yard score.
Austin-East (8-1) earned a 42-13 win over Sweetwater (6-3) Friday night to set up an October 28 showdown with Grace Christian Academy to determine the Region 2-2A title. The Roadrunners faced an early seven point deficit but the play action pass from senior quarterback Darius Harper to Gadarian Mobley for a touchdown tied the game. Austin-East's two defensive scores propelled them to victory. Chris Hunter's pick-six put the Roadrunners up 21-7. Less than two minutes later, Hunter recovered a fumble for a touchdown.
Catholic (8-1) led Cloudland (4-6) by 41 points at the half and went on to defeat the Highlanders, 41-14. The Fighting Irish scored first on a pass play from senior quarterback Chase Cunningham to Hunter Kountz. Catholic built its lead to 14 after Cunningham found Cameron Blakely on the deep ball for another Irish score. Senior wide receiver Chase Kuerschen got in on the action later in the first quarter with a wide open touchdown catch.
Farragut (8-2) defeated South-Doyle (4-5) in a 63-26 home win Friday night. Farragut already secured a playoff berth but its seeding depends largely on outcomes from Region 3-5A foes Oak Ridge and Campbell County in their last regular season games next Friday night.
William Blount (2-7) quarterback Austin Myrick scored on a quarterback-keeper from six yards out to give the Governors a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, but the Hawks (7-2) would even the score up before the half and go on to win, 21-14. With the victory, Hardin Valley clinched at least the two seed in Region 1-6A. The region champion will be decided when the Hawks face Maryville October 28.
Science Hill (6-3) defeated Bearden 34-20 in Region 1-6A action. The Hilltoppers broke a 7-7 game on a Caanan Mackie touchdown. Both Science Hill and Bearden (3-6) are playoff bound as all 6A teams advance.
Dobyns-Bennett (5-4) beat Jefferson County 45-14 Friday night. The Indians increased their lead to 14 after Jackson Wallace scored on a 3-yard run.
