Carson Newman has some new fans of its soccer teams thanks mainly to University President Randall O'Brien.
"We've got the greatest two soccer teams in America right here and I wanted the world to know it so I issued a challenge to our student body and our fans, you turn out a thousand strong and I'll jump out of a perfectly good airplane."
The fans responded with a turn out over 1,000.
"Two things happened. One, people wanted to see good soccer which they're going to always see when they watch these two teams and two, they wanted to see if I had really lost my mind."
To show their support, the players showed up at Skydive East Tennessee for Dr. O'Brien's big jump.
"It was shocking first of all because, I mean, he's the president of Carson Newman, but it's also kind of cool how he's able to do something like this to help encourage people to come out to our games."
President O'Brien has some experience in aircraft from his time serving in Vietnam, but that was almost 40 years ago, and he never jumped out of one of those aircraft two miles above the Earth.
11,000 feet later and the president lands safely on the ground with one thing on his mind. "I loved it, that was great, Go Eagles, Go Eagles!"
