More than a thousand students from all over the world are visiting Knoxville this week.

Destination Imagination, a group dedicated to enriching the global community by providing opportunities for kids of all ages, is once again hosting its final competition at the University of Tennessee. This is the 12th year that Knoxville has hosted the group.

The event kicks off on Wednesday with an opening ceremony at Thompson-Boling Arena, and continues through Saturday.

More than 14-hundred teams from 42 states and 16 countries qualified for the competition. The teams will compete in events designed to challenge them to come up with creative solutions, utlitizing science, technology, engineering and math knowledge, as well as improvisation, theater arts, writing, project management, communication innovation, teamwork and community service.

"America's Got Talent" finalist David Garibaldi and "American Idol" contestant and DI alumna Rachel Hale will perform for the students at the opening ceremony. Garibaldi, a performance painter, will create a painting with his body movement (and brushes) to the music's beat at the Welcome Center. Rachel Hale will sing the national anthem.
