1 cup shortening or butter

1 1/2 cups sugar

2 eggs

4 T. buttermilk

5 1/2 cups flour

1 1/2 tsp. ginger

1 tsp. nutmeg

1 tsp. cinnamon

Cream crisco and butter, beat in eggs. Combine flour and spices; add alternately with buttermilk. This makes a very stiff dough. Pat into pie in very thin layers. Bake at 400 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown; makes 6 to 8 layers.

For filling use 3 cups apple butter mixed with one cup applesauce and 1 tablespoon cinnamon.

Put about 3/4 cup between each layer

Pour the rest on top; wrap and refrigerate overnight.
