East Tennessee's volunteer spirit is hard to match anywhere else in the country.
Volunteer Heart used to be a segment on Channel 10, and now it's coming back! The segment will focus on the kindness and volunteer spirit of East Tennesseans.
That's why 10News is launching a segment called Volunteer Heart on 10News at 6. Every other Thursday, we'll show you what that spirit is all about.
If you've been watching Channel 10 for a while, you may remember the name Volunteer Heart. 10News Meteorologist Todd Howell started the segment back in the '90s to help organizations find volunteers.
We're bringing it back and combining it with Live a Little, a segment that we've brought you for the past 3 years where we featured a child in need of a mentor on the Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee waiting list.
BBBS said 99% of the children that were on Live a Little have been paired with mentors. We wanted to keep that momentum going.
Watch the first Volunteer Heart --Kara and Kasiah's story-- above.
In addition to featuring what mentoring is all about, each week we will show you a child on the waiting list for a big brother or big sister. There are currently about 100 kids in need of mentor. The majority of them are boys.
Demerius Logan, 7, is in the 2nd grade and needs a big brother to hang out with.
He likes basketball and playing outside, rap and church music, and his favorite foods are green beans and corn. His favorite sports teams are the Bulls, the Heat, Tennessee Volunteers, and the Falcons.
