Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero is back from her tour of Turkey and is talking about her trip.
The U.S. State Department invited her to talk about the importance of women participating in politics. Turkey is holding elections on March 31, and few women are running.
Right now, no women serve as mayors of major Turkish cities, and less than 1% of all city council members in that country are women.
Rogero said she talked about her experience as a woman in politics.
"All of this was about encouraging the women to run and encouraging the men to understand what value this brings to their political parties, to their communities, and to their governing structure," said Rogero.
Rogero's 17-year-old granddaughter went on the trip with her. The mayor paid for those expenses.
