(WBIR) Dolly Parton continues to stand by her goddaughter Miley Cyrus despite controversy surrounding the pop superstar.

FULL LIST: 'Time' unveils its '100 most influential people'

Time included Miley in its "100 Most Influential People" list for 2014, and Parton wrote the article on her famous goddaughter. The Grammy winner wrote Miley "doesn't have to be so drastic," but she'll "respect her choices."

"I did it my way, so why can't she do it her way," Dolly wrote.

The country music icon said the "Wrecking Ball" singer "knows what she's doing."

"She was very proud of the work she did as Hannah Montana, but people were gonna leave her there forever. And she was just smotherin' and chokin' in it," wrote Parton. "So she felt she had to do something completely drastic. And she did. She made her point, she made her mark, and more power to her. 'Wrecking Ball' is a great song. The whole album is great. So I'm hoping that now she can relax and show people how talented she really is."
