OMAHA, Neb. -- It doesn't get much better than the night Vanderbilt pitcher Brian Miller had on Wednesday.

The Franklin native celebrated the Commodores' first baseball national championship with his teammates and got engaged to the love of his life all within a matter of moments.

But little did his new fiancée, Megan Bonds, know, the two events are bound together by so much more than the time period in which they happened.

"I'll tell you, it's actually a sweet little story," Miller said. "The first game of the year at Long Beach I was with Tyler Beede in the outfield, and he said, 'You won't propose to your girlfriend if you win the national championship.' I shook his hand and said, 'I will do it.' And here we are."

Beede explained: "They had been dating for a couple of months, and you could just tell that they were in love. Saying 'Oh, I love you' to each other and all that. She had been hinting to him to get a ring kind of jokingly, and so the first home game of the year I said, 'Brian, you won't propose to her if we win the national championship' and we shook on it. As we kind of got closer and closer, it became more real. When we got to super regionals he bought the ring. We won super regionals so he brought it to Omaha, gave it to our trainer, Chris Ham, and he had it the whole time."

In the middle of an on-field celebration following Vanderbilt's 3-2 win over Virginia, Miller secured the ring and true to his word, ran over to Bonds, dropped on one knee and asked for her hand in marriage.

"We were walking down and he was running and he said, 'I love you and I want to spend the rest of my life with you," Bonds said. "And that was it. I can't really remember what happened after that, I was just so excited."

The couple, which has been dating for 10 months, does not have a date set for the big day just yet.

At this point, Miller is just taking it one step at a time.

"Thank goodness she said yes," he said.
