A group of protesters rallied for hire wages in downtown Knoxville on Wednesday.

They're calling on Congress to raise the minimum wage and expand economic opportunity for all Americans.

Right now, the federal minimum wage, which Tennessee follows, is $7.25 an hour.

One protester says she's worked two jobs to make ends meet and that dollar figure isn't enough.

"To actually get a check that is barely $200 a week and when you have to pay your bills and also buy your groceries and take care of your children and by shoes. Tt's not possible," says Joyce Brown.

President Obama wants to increase the federal mimimum wage to $10.10 by 20-16.

A nonpartisan budget analysis found that proposal would increase pay for more than 16.5 million people, but it would also cut 500-thousand jobs.
