The Knoxville Fire Department recognized three firefighters on Monday for their efforts to save the life of one of their own.

Captain Mark Lacey suffered a heart attack while fighting a house fire on New Year's Eve.

Fellow firefighters Dean Owens, Hugh Laxton, and Greg Saucemen immediately jumped into action and worked to save Lacey's life.

Mayor Madeline Rogero and Chief Stan Sharp honored the three men with the "Firefighter of the Quarter" awards along with Captain Lacey himself.

The firefighters say they're thankful he survived.

"You know that is what we were talking about that night in the ER, was if he just gets one more day with his grandchild, or his wife, that would mean it all. And he's gotten more days. And it wasn't what we did, I feel it was the good Lord. He just used us as a tool," said Sauceman.

Captain Lacey spent more than two weeks in the hospital before he was released to recover at home with his family
