In Hawkins County, authorities are warning of criminals on boats stealing from others on boats.

The so-called 'lake pirates' have stolen expensive fishing gear from at least six boats so far. Top notch fishing gear can cost thousands of dollars.

The thieves target unattended boats on the dock. It's much different from typical lake crimes.

"The boat dock break-ins we usually have are land-based vehicles. They pull in the dock and the trucks and trailers are sitting there, they see something inside, the just break in and get it. Chelaque Way thieves came in by boat to the marina," said John Pruitt, Hawkins County investigator.

Authorities say the pirates specifically target the most expensive items. To keep your items safe, try to remove the items from your boat when you dock.
