Update 12 pm:
(WBIR) Knoxville police said a driver could face charges after his truck crashed on Alcoa Highway, killing his passenger.
Investigators said early Saturday morning, Johnny Clowers Jr., 29, of Powell was speeding on Alcoa Highway when the front tires of his truck went off the shoulder of the highway. Clowers then overcorrected, which caused the truck to spin off the right shoulder into a ditch and flip onto its side before hitting a utility pole near Ginn Road.
The accident pinned Clowers and Amanda Johnson, 34, of Maryville inside the truck. Knoxville firefighters pulled Clowers from the vehicle and took him to the University of Tennessee Medical Center where he's listed as stable.
Johnson died at the scene.
Officials said both Clowers and Johnson drank alcohol before the accident. Investigators found open containers of alcohol and drug paraphernalia inside of the vehicle.
The Knoxville Police Department said Clowers could face charges after officials complete the investigation.
(WBIR-Knoxville) A passenger was killed and the driver had to be extricated from the vehicle after a crash on Alcoa Highway early Saturday morning.
According to the Knoxville Police Department, around 3:30 a.m. two people were pinned inside a pickup truck after the driver crashed into a telephone pole near Ginn Road.
KPD said crews with the Knoxville Fire Department extricated the driver, who was transported to UT Medical Center.
The passenger was pronounced dead at the scene.
KPD said the names of the victims are being withheld until family members are notified of the accident.
