A former student, convicted of falsely reporting a gunman at a Virginia college, will spend two years on probation.
Bryan Alexander Hairston must also pay more than $4,000 in restitution to law enforcement and counseling agencies who reponsded to the January hoax.
The 20-year-old pleaded guilty in May of making false statements. Police say Hairston called 911 and reported seeing a gunman on the University of Virginia's College of Wise campus. Officials put the school on lockdown.
The school is less than a three hours from Knoxville.
