A former guard at the Hawkins County jail has now been charged with assaulting an inmate.
According to The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Roy Junior Mathes, 37, of Rogersville, was indicted by the Hawkins County grand jury earlier this week.
The assault happened on February 23, 2013. Inmate Lloyd Gibson, 24, of Johnson City, was in jail for failing to appear in court on previous charges. While behind bars, Gibson was suspected of vandalism in the jail, and when he was removed from his cell, investigators said Mathes pushed him, causing him to hit his head against a door at least once.
After the incident, Hawkins County officials asked the TBI to investigate. Mathes was fired from his position.
Mathes was booked into the Hawkins County Jail this morning.
