Knoxville Utility Board said scammers have targeted some of its customers.

Several locally-owned businesses told KUB that a scammer called them, saying they owed money on their accounts. The caller then threatened to cut the companies' power if they didn't purchase MoneyPaks or Green Dot Cards and provide the serial numbers. These cards are often untraceable.

KUB said it never tries to get payments over the phone or sends emails that request financial information. The utility company also doesn't request payments through prepaid cards or collect payments at businesses or homes.

If you have questions about your account or feel you've been the target of a scam, call KUB at 865-524-2911.
