Anemia is a blood condition that can greatly impact your well being. Sunday morning Dr. Bob Overholt shared with anchor Ashley Izbicki basics of this health issue.
There are three general reasons people become anemic. One is loss of red blood cells which is common in young people. The other is that a person's bone marrow may not make enough red blood cells. The third is that the red blood cells themselves may be weak. Sickle cell anemia is an example of this.
Pale complexions lacking rosy cheeks and lips alert doctors to the possibility of anemia. Doctors can also tell by the condition of a patients eyes that blood tests may be needed. In addition, a patient with anemia may have leg cramps.
Doctors run routine blood count tests to determine whether the patient has anemia. The doctor then narrows down the source from 400 different causes.
Anemia can be treated with vitamin B12 injections or by taking iron.
