Knox County Mayor Tim Burchett says the task force discussing plans to reduce jail overcrowding is mainly still on a fact-finding mission.
Thursday, Burchett, Sheriff J.J. Jones, Police Chief Rausch and other area leaders met to discuss a proposed safety center which would house criminals convicted of minor crimes and those dealing with mental illenss or substance abuse.
Recently, there's been speculation over where to put a safety center, but Burchett says that talk is all too premature.
"Until we know what we're doing, I think that's, that's like we got a box and we gotta figure out a way to fill it and that's not what we need to do," he said.
Burchett says before discussing locations, the task force needs to decide what's best for taxpayers, concerned parties, and those who are or will be incarcerated.
