Three million dollars in bonuses will go into the pockets of Knox County teachers in the coming weeks.
At Monday's school board work session, members learned the district wide results of teacher evaluations and how the district will hand out performance bonuses.
This is the second year Knox County Schools is using federal grant money to provide incentive based bonuses to teachers and administrators with good evaluation scores.
On a scale of 1 to 5, 85% of teachers in the district received evaluations of 3 or higher.
The compensation system, called APEX for Advance, Perform, Excel, takes into consideration the evaluation score and then adds points for leadership and recognition of teaching in a high needs school.
Based on their APEX score, teachers can earn an extra $1,500 for a model performance to $2,000 for a exemplary performance.
This year 52% of teachers will get the bonus in November, with 3% still pending. In total, $3.1 million of grant money will go to 1,850 teachers.
"I think it's important that we're able to recognize the great work that teachers do in the classroom and make it real and make it tangible by providing financial compensation to teachers who really demonstrate the types of input and outcomes that we want to see that reinforce student learning," said Director of Knox County Schools Dr. Jim McIntyre.
All of the teacher bonuses are funded with federal grant money that will run out in a couple of years. At that point, it will be up to the school board to decide whether or not they want to use money out of the budget to reward teachers based on performance.
