(WBIR - Southeast Knox County) A newly re-discovered service flag quilted back during World War Two is helping reunite members of a Knox County church.

Members of the New Hopewell Baptist Church joined together to create the flag in the 1940's to honor and remember those soldiers who were fighting for our country. As more church members joined the military, more names were quilted onto the flag.

For years, it served as a reminder to the community to pray for those putting their lives on the line.

Then, this past spring the pastor said they found the original flag in a closet while cleaning out the church.

That flag was put back on display Sunday as part of a service honoring local Veterans.

"So originally it was just a way to bring the community together. And when they discovered that, we thought what better way to bring the community together again is to kind of let that be our focal point of today's service," Pastor Rick Loy said.
