Hundreds of people received a box filled with non-perishable foods given away by Extreme Towing.
(WBIR - New Market) The spirit of giving was on full display in one East Tennessee community, as Extreme Towing gave away 17,000 pounds of food to people in need.
Chrystal Thurman of New Market was among the more than 500 people who lined outside the towing company's building on Saturday.
She said, "It's the time of the year. We need food, obviously." Thurman continued, "We have a big family, a lot of kids in the family. It's just things that we need."
The boxes of food, given away on a first-come, first-served basis, included all sorts of canned goods and boxed good for adults and babies.
This is the first time Extreme Towing has held a food giveaway. Owner Brent Spencer says he was inspired by other groups making a different and he wanted to do the same.
Spencer said, "When you work around the community, you see a lot of people in need. There's always a thought in your head and you want to do what you can to help them." He continued, "It's great knowing that you've helped these many people. I've seen a lot of kids and that's the best feeling in the world."
Also helping out at the food giveaway were New Market firefighters, who towed the heavy boxes of food to vehicles. It was a small gesture that put big smiles on faces.
Spencer said he plans to continue the food giveaway in the years to come.
