A winter weather storm that has brought ice and snow to other parts of the county has caused delays and cancellations at McGhee Tyson Airport.

The storm stretched from Texas to Ohio and affected air travel to and from those areas.

McGhee Tyson officials said the airport experienced more flight delays during the storm than it did when East Tennessee experienced snow a few weeks ago.

"When we had the snow a few weeks ago during the Thanksgiving Day holiday time frame, we were working to maintain our airport and keep it operating. So we were able to control that situation from our facility and so we saw minimal delays," said Becky Huckaby, spokesperson for McGhee Tyson.

Airport officials have been keeping a close eye on the storm. Passengers should expect delays Friday into Saturday morning. Those flying are encouraged to check the status of their flight before heading to the airport.

Although the winter weather has slowed down air travel, it didn't seem to stop some on the road. Several truck drivers who stopped in Knoxville said the weather was not keeping them from carrying loads across country.

Truck driver Luther Taylor said it's all about being safe.

"It's not nice to be out right now, but if you can manage you speed and watch for traffic, like hazardous things ahead, then you can be safe on the road. Just keep the speed at a minimum," he said.
