Thousands of people are supporting a 14 year old girl who's in critical condition following a multi-vehicle crash that killed two, including the teenager's mother.
(WBIR) Alyssa Miranda, 14, is recovering in a hospital after being involved in a three-vehicle deadly crash on Christmas.
Alyssa, her 13-year-old sister, and their mother, Heather Miranda, were on the road after visiting the grandparents when Knox County deputies said the family's Chrysler minivan was hit head-on by a Dodge minivan, which first crashed into a stalled SUV on Mine Road in Mascot.
Heather Miranda, a mother of four, died. The driver of the Dodge, Patricia Burroughs of White Pine, also died. Alyssa's 13-year-old sister was taken to the hospital and has been released. Alyssa is suffering from critical injuries.
Her father, Sevierville firefighter Michael Miranda, said, "She has one cracked rib, bruised lungs, and majority of her injuries are to her brain." Miranda added, "It's been awful. It's been extremely stressful."
Miranda said his daughter had been comatose for seven days following the wreck, but opened her eyes earlier this week. She's since been in and out of a comatose state. Miranda cannot thank his daughter's caretakers enough.
He said,"The care that UT has provided for Alyssa has been phenomenal. Not only has the staff been caring for her, but they've been caring to each and every one of us, as well."
Many more are also showing they care for Alyssa and her family. Nearly 5,000 people have "LIKED" a Facebook page called "Angels for Alyssa". Alyssa's family is using the Facebook page as a way to keep everyone updated with the teenager's condition, but the community is using it to encourage the family and let them know they are praying for for a full recovery.
Michael Miranda is overwhelmed by the social media support for his daughter. He hopes the final post on the "Angels for Alyssa" Facebook page will come from Alyssa herself.
"My ultimate hope is for the last status update regarding her is going to be her doing it telling everyone thank you for their support. That's what we're praying for," Miranda said.
Miranda said Alyssa will have to undergo months of in-patient rehabilitation out of the state.
