TVA is preparing for an increase in power demand while the extreme cold temperatures linger in the region.

TVA says its electric system is secure and stable. The utility started taking steps last week to cut down on the risk of power outages and they're working with local power companies to make sure they're prepared for the high volume.

"We're watching all the generating assets. We've been planning for this. All of our generating plants have procedures in place for cold weather to be sure that we have everything we need on hand to be sure that we deliver that energy that everybody needs," said TVA's Travis Brickey.

TVA's all-time winter power demand was set on January 16th, 2009, when the average temperature was nine degrees. The all-time record demand was set August 16, 2007, when temperatures average 102 degrees.
