(WBIR) Accusations about animal abuse and improper euthanasia are hanging over the Hawkins County animal shelter.

A group calling for an investigation into the shelter gathered outside a meeting Thursday. They say animals are going in healthy, but are severely underweight when they die.

They called for answers into what's happening, but were pushed out the meeting before they could get those answers.

"Kittens have been tossed into a box like they were nothing from a third shelf up down into a paper box to be euthanized," said Sue Pierce, former board member.

Neither the shelter's president nor vice president would discuss the mistreatment claims.
