(WBIR) Knoxville police arrested a man after he jumped into the Holston River trying to escape from officers Friday morning.
Officers charged Bill Lemka, 44, of Sevierville for stealing a car from a parking lot off 6300 Asheville Highway. The owner of the stolen car told police left his vehicle running to warm it up before he left for work at about 5 a.m. A few minutes after going back inside the business, the owner saw the car speed out of the parking lot.
Minutes later, officers spotted the car traveling on Asheville Highway near Gov. John Sevier Highway. Police then said Lemka pulled into a parking lot off the highway, ran out of the car, and jumped into the Holston River. Officials arrested Lemka once he got out of river.
Authorities charged Lemka with one count of felony theft.
